Second robotics team advances to championships

All three Newberg robotic teams advances to the elimination round in Saturday’s Oregon First Technology Challenge (FTC) qualifying tournament competition at St Helens High School. A second team earned a berth to advance to the Oregon Championships on March 3rd.

Team Aeterna and The Tiger Team landed in third and fourth positions after the five qualifying rounds guaranteeing their appearance in the elimination rounds of the competition.  After alliance selections were complete, the Tiger Team had joined the second place Nanites from Lincoln High School and Tiger Team 2 was selected to join the first place Robo-Warriors from Amity.

After defeating Aeterna’s alliance in the semifinal rounds,the Tiger Team faced off against Tiger Team 2 in the tournament finally where the Tiger Team’s alliance prevailed in the end.   However, as part of the finals alliance, Tiger Team 2 was able to pick up an invitation to the State Championships and will join The Tiger Team that qualified on January 27th in Tigard.

When all the awards were handed out, The Tiger Team returned home with trophies for being a member of the Winning Alliance. The team also won the Think Award, given to the team that best reflects the “journey” the team experienced during the engineering design process.  The Tiger Team also received a second place award for the Inspire Award.

With two teams already qualified for the State Championships through competition, team Aeterna stands to receive Newberg’s State
Championship pass for hosting next weekend’s qualifying tournament at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville.  

All of Newberg’s teams will be back competing together in the championships.
