Last weekend, NHS had four teams who participated in the FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics Competition through ORTOP. The FTC program is composed of three parts: the robot game, the engineering notebook, and community outreach. This season's game, or mission, was called Velocity Vortex. The object of the game is to score the most points by shooting particle balls into either the center or corner vertices, placing a cap ball on top of the center vortex, or pressing beacons on the side of the 12x12 foot mat. Each year, teams record their design, building, and programming of robotics in their engineering notebook. Most importantly, teams encourage STEM through community outreach like educational camps, school visits, FIRST LEGO League team mentoring, public presentations, and spreading the word about the FIRST program. All teams compete in a local league that consists of five weekend meets, then the top fifty percent (50%) qualify to participate in the super- qualifier tournament, then it goes on to regionals (state), super regionals, and the the FIRST world championship. Overall, the FTC program is a great program for those interested in STEM and robotics. Participants often spend more time working on robots and community outreach than a typical high school sport, which makes FTC a great program for college and personal resumes.
