Newberg High School teacher Daniel Evonuk nominated as VFW Teacher of the Year!

Dan Evonuk, Art and Welding 3 teacher at NHS, was nominated as VFW Teacher of the Year. Evonuk, graduate of Western Oregon University (B.A. Art) and Willamette University (M.A.T.), has been teaching with NHS for 9 years, teaching 9-12 grade levels in the areas of Art and Welding. He also runs and operates a hazelnut farm. Evonuk is a former veteran, having served in the US Army as an Infantryman, and was awarded multiple awards for his service.

Students describe Evonuk as one of their favorite teachers and that he is a great source of support and is always willing to help you if you don't understand something. Students commented they appreciated that he is easy to approach and ask questions to.  One faculty member describes him as the best co-worker she has ever had.

Evonuk will now be entered into the district competition and if chosen, will then proceed to compete on the state level.
Good luck, Dan, and thank you for your hard work!

NHS Prostart Culinary Team competes at Chemeketa Community College

NHS Senior Tim Forbes lead his team of Sydney Roesli, Taylor Coen, Michael Forbes and Katherine Shephard in an intense contest this weekend as part of the Prostart Culinary Team. The team is judged on their knife skills, their ability to fabricate a chicken (which means cut it apart), their preparation of a 3-course meal using only 2 butane burners, and their overall teamwork and confidence.

The meal this year was a Northwest-Asian Fusion:
- Fresh Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce
- Poached Skuna Bay Salmon with Hazelnut glaze.
- Szechuan Beet Greens & Vegetables with fresh Mushrooms
- Crafted Semolina Pasta
- Yin Yang Bao (Sweet White Bao joined with Dark Chocolate Bao- Candied clementine glacé & Raspberry coulis.)

Last year, the NHS team finished in the top ten in the state, which was an exceptional finish against incredibly stiff competition.

Special thanks to NHS Kitchen Manager Val Daniel for serving as the team's mentor the past two years.
