Vocal, instrumental programs headed to state

The entire Newberg High School music program will be represented at the highest level of competition at the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) State Championships in May. The Symphonic Choir, Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the String Ensemble all qualified and were invited to perform. Three students will compete in the state solo competition this weekend.

Nearly 30 percent of the NHS student body participates in the school instrumental or vocal program. That’s more than twice the national average of 12.5 percent of students participating in a high school instrumental or vocal program.

State solo competition is Saturday, April 30 at Lewis and Clark College. Newberg High School students performing a 10 minute solo are Hannah Consenz, vocal soprano; Jordan Paulas, French Horn; and Victoria Baker, flute.

The 6A Choir State Championships are Saturday, May 7 at George Fox University. Newberg High School students perform at 1:00 p.m. thirty 6A choirs qualified and 24 were invited to perform. There are 85 mostly junior and senior students in the Symphonic Choir. Jason Taylor directs the choral program.

The NHS String Ensemble competes May 13th, at the LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Newberg is one of eight 6A orchestras to qualify and be invited to perform. There are 39 students in the String Ensemble, which is directed by Gwen Gilbertson.

The 74-student Symphonic Wind Ensemble plays on Saturday, May 14th, at the LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University in Corvallis. Twenty-three 6A bands qualified and 20 were accepted into the state contest. Joel Tanner directs the band program.
