There are many reasons why volunteering will help your student in the future!
In this economy it is becoming more and more difficult to get a job. Regular volunteer work not only gives students something to write down on a résumé, but it provides job skills and connects your kids to adults in the community that your student can ask for a job reference later.
Volunteering can help your student do better in school. In 1999 the National Research Council identified service learning as one of the most effective ways to engage students, and it's now considered an essential tool in preventing dropping out of school.
Colleges also look at volunteer service when they are choosing which students to admit. If your student chooses to try and get into a selective school, their volunteer record can give them an advantage over a student who doesn’t have any community service. Volunteering is a way for your student to gain self-confidence and learn the value of helping others. Many studies have shown the health benefits of volunteering. To boil it down, doing things for other people just makes us feel good!
