This Week in Newberg Nation

Newberg Oregon School District

Cheerleaders Double as National Champs!
Congratulations to Newberg Nation Cheerleading who won their second consecutive national championship this past week! Tiger Cheer has grown over the past six years into one of the most awe inspiring programs in the state of Oregon, let alone the United States! Finishing second in the OSAA championships for three consecutive years the cheerleaders then went on to win the past three OSAA State Championships thus resulting in six consecutive years of either 2nd or 1st place finishes! WOW!

Tiger Cheer has added upon their six consecutive 1st or 2nd place finishes in the state of Oregon by winning their second consecutive national championship this past week in California! Congratulations to Coach Lisa Berg and Tiger Cheer, we are very proud of you!!!

This event is intended to showcase all the great work the Seniors have put into their senior projects and for our community, parents, peers and staff (past & present) to see all the class of 2015 has accomplished! The seniors will be presenting their projects at booths set up throughout the NHS main building thus allowing you to pick and choose which projects you find most interesting!

We want to invite you to stop by during the event and come see what real world applications our seniors have been working on. Art projects, engine rebuilds, sports camps, blood drives, horticulture activities, business management, teaching, culinary arts and movie productions are only the beginning of a short list of the amazing projects our seniors have completed.

BTW - There will be over 300 projects to see!

Our Seniors would love to see you there and appreciate your support!

GOT WHEELS?

Senior Kieran Brown has put together a senior project that all car enthusiasts just have to know about! He will be putting on his very own car show in the Elliot Street parking lot here at NHS on April 25 from 9-2!

From classic cars to cruisers, new age and radical custom jobs Kieran’s show will be a true Newberg Nation moment (who knows, maybe the Risen family’s restored ’73 Nova SS will have to make an appearance as well, or maybe their daughter in laws immaculate ’52 Chevy pickup…both perhaps?).

It will be an event that will bring all automotive lovers hearts to sheer joy as there will be endless chrome, polish, see through gloss paint and horsepower everywhere! For more information on the show or how to get your entry submitted contact Kieran at hoy.brown@comcast.net!

Newberg High School is participating again  in the Oregon Healthy Teens Survey (OHT), survey sponsored by the Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division and the Oregon Department of Education. The survey gathers information about health risk behaviors of students in grades 8 and 11.  The survey includes questions about nutrition, physical activity, tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, personal safety and violence-related behavior, HIV knowledge, mental health, suicide, harassment, sexual risk behavior/attitudes, and interactions with peers, adults, school staff, and community members that influence youth well-being.

Students will be asked to complete this online survey through their advisory class April 27 – May 8. Each junior will receive a letter explaining more about the survey in advisory next week. In this letter there is an opt out section for parents. If you feel that having your student take this survey is something you would rather they not do, please fill out the bottom portion of the letter and have your student return that portion to their advisor.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Malone at 503-554-4400

Newberg NationThoughts…

~Principal Risen

I had the privilege of attending a leadership workshop this week and found myself intrigued by the definition of “culture” they gave at this presentation. Their definition was that culture is “what you allow.”

Having spent considerable time contemplating this notion of culture being “what you allow” I came up with three key constructs to ponder regarding this statement.

The first thing I contemplated was what is the “what” they are referring to?

The second included me exhausting myself over who is “you” in this statement?

Finally, the third variable I analyzed to my wits end was this notion of “allowing.” What did they mean by “allow?”

What I ultimately took away from this definition of culture (what you allow) is that we are all individually and collectively responsible for building our culture, thus the “you” is each of us.

“What” each of us allows does become an accepted part of our culture. Therefore, we must be mindful of “what” we are allowing as it will become a part of our culture, an accepted norm.

But what does it mean to “allow?” I left the conference understanding that “allow” meant that we each bear the responsibility of positively policing ourselves, each other, and our community, as what we allow individually and collectively will define our culture.

So what are “we” and “you” willing to allow?

  • Excellence, or non-excellence?
  • Negativity or positivity?
  • Friendliness or less than friendliness?
  • Zero kids fall through the cracks, or kids fall through the cracks?
  • Excuses or results?

There are many, many more elements of culture that we must consider if we analyze “what you allow” as a definition of culture. But what we allow, what we don’t allow, and what we continue to allow will define Newberg Nation, Newberg High and the greater Newberg community.

So what are you going to allow to define us as our culture?
