Congratulations to Newberg Nation’s wind ensemble who qualified this past Tuesday for the OSAA state championships at the Three Rivers League District Band championships at Lakeridge High School. Way to go and good luck Tigers!

Newberg NationThoughts…

~Principal Risen

I received a letter in my mailbox yesterday, a letter absent of any return address or name, so my curiosity immediately got the best of me and I opened it. Lying inside was what appeared to be a letter, a typed letter, well written, and professionally addressed to yours truly.

The letter was from one of our Newberg Nation families. I was so impressed at what this family was saying my veins surged with pride, admiration and appreciation for the time, energy and thought this family had put into so carefully crafting this communication.

As I read through the letter I continued to be increasingly impressed by its content. One significant message clearly began to resonate out to me, leaving me in deep reflection when I finished reading it. It was so profound. It embodied the true potential that we have right here in Newberg Nation. It left me with my jaw dropped.

The letter specifically talked about how one of our teachers had impacted this family’s student. And while the anecdote was a pleasure to read, the message embedded beyond the anecdote and my subsequent reflection on that message compelled me to share this story with all of Newberg Nation.

You see, the family that wrote the letter talked about how our teacher was “honest, but encouraging” to their child. Two simple words; honest, encouragement. Yet, so captivating of a concept when put into the context of teacher and student you can’t help but pause at the simple accuracy and applicability of this statement.

The family went on to talk about how the teacher inspired their child through encouragement while being honest with their child at the same time. Their anecdote continued, ultimately explaining that the end result was their student developing a passion, a burning desire, to further themselves in this teacher’s curriculum. And in their own words, simply because the teacher was both honest, and encouraging.

What is additionally special about this story is that their student also gleaned the true lesson of learning, of education, because the teacher was honest, yet encouraging. The student learned that to master the curriculum they are going to have to work hard, that we all begin our learning at our own point, and that we have to be open to the honest feedback provided by others in order for us to grow, learn and achieve. Meanwhile, when that feedback is provided in an encouraging way, with support to boot, it makes the challenge seem attainable to the student, it ignites a passion for the curriculum in them, just as it did in this case.

I have to tell you that I was captivated by this message as it truly captures the power of educators and the aspirations of learners. It’s amazing that just paying attention to how we say things can have such profound implications. Implications for one’s life that will lead to similar implications for endless others.

Keep it up Tigers! Stay honest, keep encouraging, and remember that how we say things truly matters!
