What a week it was Newberg Nation! From the opening ceremony in which NHS Alumnus of ‘83 and English teacher Gail Grobey sang the national anthem and led us in the traditional alma mater to the crowning of the court Friday morning at the week end assembly, it was a week of school spirit, honoring alumni, and continuing long lasting Tiger traditions!
Complete with tourists, student posing as teachers and teachers posing as students, the week was filled with dress up days, school activities and energy as the week culminated with yet another Newberg Nation dress up contest in an effort to see which student has the strongest school spirit! Of course, the assemblies were also filled with old traditions as well as new as the Newberg Nation leadership team rolled out some new student spectator activities in “The Rollercoaster” and “The Stomp!” We are hoping to have footage of these new NHS traditions up on the website soon!
This year’s festivities also included some other special performances including the cast of “Oklahoma” performing a song (PS- the show opens Nov. 6, save the date!) as well as Newberg Nation’s very own Jeremy Beckham leading the NHS student body in his own rendition of “Scotland the Brave” on his bagpipes! What a sight that was!
And how can we have Homecoming Week without a court to christen. So here they are, Homecoming Court 2014!
Freshmen: Brett Brammer, Maddie DeVerna, Noelle Sawyer, Elijah Warren
Sophomores: Peter Gentile, Kaelin Horton, Hutton Peterson, Taylor Rarick
Juniors: Sawyer Hinkle, Jessica Jennings, Douglas Veliz Salinas, Joscelynne Sanchez

Congratulations to our court members and their families!
A Record Setting SAT Year?
Equally exciting this week was the fact that 155 NHS seniors took the SAT on Wednesday, a great launching pad in our effort to have 70% of all seniors take the SAT! If your senior has yet to take the SAT there is still time, please have them see their counselor ASAP to sign up! It is our hope and goal that the class of 2015 will set NHS records in terms of the number of seniors that take the SAT this year! Furthermore, we are also challenging ourselves to be the #1 school in the state when it comes to the percentage of our seniors that takes the SAT, as outlined below.
Here are the top 10 high schools in Oregon with at least 1000 students sorted by percent of students taking the SAT for 2013-14. (Out of 64)
The median of the 64 schools is 39.8
Please do your part and share in this history making effort! As you can see from this report that we are doing well, now let’s go for #1! Again, please have your senior student see their guidance counselor to get signed up to take the SAT, today!
Parking Passes at NHS?
Newberg Nation families, we need your help and support in ensuring that your student driver has an approved NHS parking sticker and their vehicle is registered with the office! Please know that in the very near future we will be expecting all students parking in our parking lots to have their parking passes visibly displayed in their vehicles! Please have your student driver see their small school office to get a parking permit form if they currently do not have one! Thank you for your support!
Dance, Dance, Dance!!!
With the arrival of our first dance of the year the NHS staff would like to ask parents to review the NHS dance policies with your student(s) that plan to attend the Homecoming Dance this Saturday. The NHS dance policy has been posted on the homepage of the NHS website for your convenience! Thank you for helping make our dances safer and more comfortable for all of our students by reviewing our dance expectations with your student(s)!
Conference Schedule Set...
The staff at NHS would like to invite all students and parents to attend conferences with their teachers!
On Wednesday, October 29, staff will welcome students and parents to discuss their academic progress between the hours of 4-8 pm while on Thursday, October 30th, students and parents are welcome to attend either the 12-3 pm session or the 4-8 pm session.
It is the hope of the staff here at NHS that offering two evenings of conferences will assist parents in their ability to attend!
The NHS athletic & Bookkeeping office will also be open during conferences! It’s the perfect time to register for Winter Sports—Boys & Girls Basketball, Swimming & Wrestling or pay/discuss any school related fees. If you have questions, please contact our athletic secretary, Ronni @ 503-554-4407 cookr@newberg.k12.or.us or our bookkeeper, Sue @ 503-554-4405 andersons@newberg.k12.or.us
Please note that NHS will also be closed on Friday, October 31st.

Newberg Nation Thoughts….from Mr. Risen
You know, I often find myself pausing and reminding myself that regardless of how busy I get that I have to be in the moment with this student, this person, at this time, listening clearly and effectively when they are talking to me. Similarly, I also take pause when considering exactly how I am going to say or do something as I believe, like Edelman’s quote below, that each of those conversations, each interaction with another person, each action I take, does add up over time and results in the net product I have produced in terms of the relationship I have built, the outcome I desire, or how I made the person I was interacting with feel when they walked away from me. So take a moment Tigers, read what Edelman has to say, and ask yourself, “Am I taking the time to give each of my interactions the attention and respect they deserve?" After all, we all remember one thing when we walk from a conversation with someone else, we remember how they made us feel!
“WE MUST NOT, IN TRYING TO THINK ABOUT HOW WE CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE, IGNORE THE SMALL DAILY DIFFERENCE WE CAN MAKE WHICH, OVER TIME, ADD UP TO BIG DIFFERENCES THAT WE OFTEN CANNOT FORESEE.”
~MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN
