This week in Newberg Nation!
It’s Mark Twain week here at Newberg Nation as our thespians kickoff yet another great performance! According to Flying Tiger Mrs. Drea Ferguson, “get ready to laugh!” The show opened last night at 7 with more showings tonight at 7pm, tomorrow, and Thursday, Friday and Saturday, February 12, 13 & 14 respectively!

NHS College & Career Center:

Filing your FAFSA was the first step in accessing federal and state financial aid. Now you and your parents need to file taxes so you can accurately update your Student Aid Report (SAR), which colleges will use to prepare your financial aid award.  File taxes as early as possible– before the April 15 deadline is best.

Stop by the College and Career Center to learn about available scholarships or look at the list on our webpage.

Internships are available at Newberg High School!
This is a great way to get started with a company that might lead into a paid position. Internships earn high school credit and also look great on college and scholarship applications. We have multiple positions available ranging from office work, retail, and museum tours to a senior activity coordinator. Please pick up an application from Ms. Peterson in the Silver School office.

There is a program with Providence Health System called Career Highlights. These are three hour mini courses focused on a specific health care career field. This qualifies as a Job Shadow needed for graduation. These events are on Saturdays and students need to provide their own transportation. Registration for March Career Highlights begins on Feb. 2nd and will be open until spaces are filled. The March Career Highlights include:

  • Respiratory Therapy on Tuesday, March 3 at Providence Portland Medical Center from 9 a.m.- noon.
    Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
on Friday, March 6 at Providence Willamette Falls Community Center from 9 a.m.- noon.
  • Rehabilitation Services (physical therapy, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, and audiology) on Wednesday, March 11 at Providence Newberg Medical Center from 9 a.m.- noon.

Note: There is still space in our Rehabilitation Services Career Highlight on Friday, Feb. 27 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center from 1-4 p.m. Please encourage students and career seekers to attend this fabulous Career Highlight that will explore careers in physical therapy, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, and audiology!

Last Friday, the NHS Boys Varsity Basketball team headed to Ewing Young Elementary school to help the 4th and 5th grade students develop their basketball skills.  The varsity team spent time in Mitch Sturdevant's PE classes, working with students on ball-handling, shooting, and passing skills.  At the conclusion of their time, the varsity boys put on a 'dunk show' for the elementary students.  One 4th grader said, 'This is the best day ever!'

This event was one of several efforts the NHS Boys Basketball team has and will continue to participate in as part of a mentoring program that has been developed with Ewing Young Principal, Kevin Milner.  Last night, the Varsity Basketball team visited Ewing Young to lead a Family Reading night for students, parents, and siblings.  There are also plans for the Basketball team to host a leadership development seminar with some of the Ewing Young students.  At this event, NHS varsity basketball players will talk about the importance of Honesty, Responsibility, Reliability, Perseverance, Trustworthiness, and Courage.  The culminating event will take place on Feb 22nd when the NHS Varsity Basketball team will take 19 Ewing Young students to attend a Portland Trailblazers game.
