This week in Newberg Nation!

What a week in Newberg Nation! From the Oregon Department of Education visiting our CTE and STEM programs, to our assembly Friday, the Mark Twain winter production and our final events for our winter sports seniors, it has been a week packed with laughter, goodbyes and optimism in the growth of our programs!

NHS College & Career Center:

Get a Check Up: Most colleges require a measles immunization and recommend other vaccinations as well. Make sure you’re healthy and ready to go!

Local Scholarhips Are In: Newberg Rotary, Golden Gathering, Newberg Athletic Booster, Newberg Performing Arts Booster, Duane Marshall Memorial, and Kiwanis.
Stop by the College and Career Center to learn about available scholarships or look at the list on our webpage.

Attention students that picked up a Chaperone Application for Edwards Outdoor School: The applications had incorrect date on them. The correct dates are May 4-6th. You can make the change on your application or pick up a new one.

Internships are available at Newberg High School!
This is a great way to get started with a company that might lead into a paid position. Internships earn high school credit and also look great on college and scholarship applications. We have multiple positions available ranging from office work, retail, and museum tours to a senior activity coordinator. Please pick up an application from Ms. Peterson in the Silver School office.

There is a program with Providence Health System called Career Highlights. These are three hour mini courses focused on a specific health care career field. ODE Takes a STEM & CTE Tour

On Tuesday the Oregon Department of Education visited Newberg High to look into how our $496,000 district wide grant money was being allocated at NHS and to see our progress. With Vickie Peterson, Dan Malone and Andy Byerley leading the way, the visit went exceptionally well as ODE gave immediate feedback that they were impressed with all that we have implemented as well as how many new opportunities for students we have created!

Their visit included a presentation on our activities to this end as Dr. Kym, Mr. Risen, Mr. Malone, Mrs. Peterson, Mr. Byerley, Mr. Schierholtz and four of our STEMMIes  senior Eli Gonzales, sophomore Jaiden  Cochenour, freshman Tory Ghanaccia and sophomore Marcos Cazares also had a chance to speak on behalf of our new STEM program.

Mrs. Linda Sandberg also spoke to the ODE representatives on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce sharing how the grant money, and Mrs. Peterson’s partnership with the chamber, have dramatically increased job shadow and internship opportunities across the community for NHS students. Her comments led to quite a brainstorm of all of the renewed interest, outreach and support our community has brought forth as we have reinvigorated the effort to connect our students with our business and post-secondary education providers.

Ms. Lynn Montoya-Quinn, the Director of PCC Newberg, was also in attendance to speak in regards to the ongoing and expanding dual credit opportunities PCC and NHS continue to collaborate on.

The presentations were followed with a tour of our STEM and CTE classrooms with an opportunity to see our Robotics teams preparing their robots for upcoming competitions. It was a GREAT Newberg Nation day!

TigerSpirit!

It’s evident all across NHS that Newberg Nation is continuing to revitalize school spirit and pride at Newberg High! This was evidenced yet again this Friday as NHS ASB  held its mid-year assembly. Complete with the marching band club playing the national anthem to the annual faculty vs. students basketball game (broadcast on the OCHO), the assembly also included a Hawaiian dance performance, many special announcements and of course Ms. Gail Grobey (NHS Alum) leading the student body in the alma mater! Gottatell ya, that Flying Tiger spirit is running hot around here!

Make sure you get out tonight to see our Flying Thespians in action as they perform tonight and tomorrow before the show closes! Filled with hot water bottles, slapstick, hidden disguises, mystery, misdirection and romance (after all it is Valentine’s Day weekend), don’t miss this one as it will make you laugh all the way home! Way to go Mrs. Ferguson and our Troupe, you have done yet another masterful job! Oh yeah, show time is 7pm!

  • Mr. Burke and Mr. Brown will present information on how to get involved in Newberg Nation!
  • A panel of parents and administrators will present information on how to help your student be more successful in high school with tips, trick, strategies and more!

FORECASTING FOR 2015-2016

Newberg Nation it’s time to start thinking about which classes you are interested in taking next year. Forecasting season is right around the corner and will run March 12-20.

Information will be available on our website beginning the week of March 2nd. Complete with a copy of the course catalog and forecasting sheets for each grade level students and parents will have access to those materials via our website.

Forecasting materials will also be handed out during advisories and at the middle schools beginning March 12 and there will be a Forecasting Help Center open to all students and parents on Wednesday, March 18, from 5-7pm in the West Commons. This will be a great time to get specific questions answered in a one on one format with counselors and administrators, especially those that have questions about dual credit, graduation requirements, Advanced Placement course questions and specific questions about organizing a schedule that will keep your student involved in co-curricular offerings yet meet their graduation requirements!

Our deadline for all forecasting sheets will be Thursday, March 19. Please have your student return their forecasting sheet to their advisory teacher by that time! We really appreciate everyone turning in their materials by that day so that we may begin building our master schedule for the 2015-2016 school year. Happy forecasting Newberg Nation!

Tiger Athletics: thank you seniors!

Senior Moments:

No, not the forgetful things we struggle with, but the opportunities to thank our senior student-athletes and their parents for their time, their passion and their dedication to our athletic programs.

As we wrap up our winter seasons, some of our programs have held the last home event of their seasons and others are scheduled to do in the next few weeks.

On Thursday, February 5, the Boys and Girls Swim Teams sent our seniors off with impressive wins over Sherwood and St. Mary's Academy.  During a break in the meet, seniors were introduced with their parents and listen to the words and appreciation of Head Coach George Sampson.  The following swimmers will finish their high school swim careers at the District and State Meets, both of which are held at Mt. Hood Community College.  Wishing the following seniors the best of luck: Craig Beecher, Evan Bell, Nicola Bolz, Joshua Duffin, Brooklyne Hazenberg, David Flores Juarez, Juan Andres Guerrero Mora, Kyle Hansen, Casey Jentges, Cameron Kisling, Tate Masse, Katrina Reichenbach and Chiara Zangrandi.

The Three Rivers League District meet is on Friday, February 13 and Saturday, February 14.

Our wrestling program sent their eight seniors off in style by defeating league rival Canby Cougars, 36-27.  Senior Carson Albo brought a packed house to its feet as he pinned his opponent in his last home dual meet.  Congrats to Carson Albo, Kasey Fish, Brandon Harper, Timothy Lane, Matthew Mc Carthy, Justen McConville, Evan Smith and James Williams.

Newberg High School also recognized former Assistant Coach, Rudy Vendrell, who stands as the only individual who spent 30 years in a program big on tradition and excellence.  Coach Vendrell has retired from his coaching position.

Both boys and girls basketball teams, as well as our cheerleaders will hold their final regular season home games and honor their seniors and parents in the next few weeks.

Congrats and thank you to both our seniors and their parents!

Newberg NationThoughts…

~Principal Risen

The upcoming events scheduled for this weekend have me pondering this week about the interesting dualities that Valentine’s Day and President’s Day share. Given a modernist mindset one could argue that the two events falling so close together is a great time to remind ourselves that on Valentine’s Day we give to others, just as our founding fathers gave so much in helping build our wonderful country.

And while we turn to one another this Saturday and express our love and gratitude to one another we should also remind ourselves that Monday is not just a day away from school, it is day of remembrance for our former leaders and how their efforts, sacrifices and vision helped build the nation we all have the privilege of living in.

Thus I encourage you, Newberg Nation, to both tell those you love that you love them tomorrow, and to remember come Monday, why school is canceled and we are having a national holiday. For one of our duties is to care for one another in the present, while respecting what is provided for us based on our past!
