This week in Newberg Nation….

STATE CHAMPS!

Congratulations to our Newberg Nation’s Boys Water Polo team on their 12-7 victory over Southridge this past Saturday evening en route to winning the OWPA State Championship! Knotted at 7-7 early in the second half after a first half that could only be described as a “shootout,” the Tigers defense clamped down and kept the Skyhawks scoreless the rest of the way as they took home the first place trophy! Congratulations to all the players and coaches on this remarkable season! Our Flying Tigers Girls Water Polo team also finished another highly successful season by taking 5th place at the state championships after victories Friday morning over Reynolds (10-9) and defeating Westview 14-3 on Saturday to take home the 5th place trophy! It was obviously a Newberg Nation display this past weekend at the Osborne Aquatic Center in Corvallis!

DANCE TEAM SHOUT OUT!

We also want to recognize our Tiger Riot Dance Team.  They competed this weekend in Wilsonville and took 2nd place in Novelty category with 73 points.  With that finish, they qualified to compete at the Fall Dance Championships on December 6th.  Two freshmen, Yesenia Camacho & Victoria Guarnaccia, both finished in the Top 10 in Novice Drilldown and will compete as individuals at the Fall Dance Championships.  Congrats to all the dancers and head coach, Cheryl Baltzell for their great performances this past weekend!

Accreditation???

Newberg High School is going through an accreditation year this year as NHS continues to ensure that the school maintains an accredited status in the eyes of the state of Oregon and post-secondary education providers. One of our duties that we must conduct during an accreditation year is to survey students, parents and staff! Please know that we are currently preparing the surveys for all of our stakeholders to take and that your feedback on those surveys is very important in terms of us measuring where we are currently at and how we are currently doing. So stay posted, Tigers, there is more to follow in the weeks ahead regarding when and how to give us your input!

The Breakfast Club

We had a great opportunity to meet with some Newberg Nation parents this morning and talk about all things Newberg! From talking about our Flying Tigers to Common Core, small schools, bell schedules, dual credits, advisory and more, it was a great conversation to be had in parents, and administrators, had an opportunity share ideas, hopes and feedback regarding Newberg High! Thank you to all of the parents that attended, we really appreciate it! Please stay posted as we will announce Decembers time and location just after the Thanksgiving Break!

Newberg NationThoughts…

~Principal Risen

So what are you “thankful” for this Thanksgiving? As you probably know, Thanksgiving began back in 1621 with the Pilgrims celebrating their bountiful harvest and being thankful for their good fortune. But what about four centuries later? Are we still thankful for our harvest? Our good fortune? Our family and friends? Do we take pause and consider the power of just one, simple, “Thank You!”

It’s amazing in an era in which we have become so digitized, so socially connected via electronic mediums, our lives so privatized by the technologies at our disposal, and the “Warp Drive” speed at which we live seeming to have turned our lives into a non-stop hurried rush, that we often don’t take pause to think about what we are thankful for, let alone take a moment and verbalize a genuine “Thanks!” to our friends, family, to a random stranger that assisted us, or for the many things we have to be thankful for.

So this Thanksgiving I am calling out all of you Flying Tigers out there and challenging you to stop, take pause, and say “Thanks!” Say it for every small or large thing that you should be thankful for, and say it to the people who least expect it. You will be surprised by the reaction, and at times, lack of a reaction whatsoever. But if we are to spread good will we cannot concern ourselves with those that will not accept our genuine appreciation, we can merely control our own actions and in so doing spread good will.

So I will start with me, and then challenge all of you that read this newsletter to pass it forward. I am thankful to you, Newberg Nation, for this year has been a huge transition for Julie and me, a year in which I have faced one of the greatest challenges of my career as a professional educator, and a year in which we welcomed two new grandsons to the Risen family. And while we are delighted at the arrival of our two healthy little guys, Thomas and Jackson, we are also thankful for the support, patience, understanding and warm embrace we have received in joining your community, as we have felt very welcomed and valued as new members in the Newberg community. So thank you to everyone out there in Newberg Nation for being such great ambassadors to a wonderful community, and for acting like Flying Tigers in your support of me and my family!

Now it’s your turn to get out there and pay this message forward, to simply say “Thanks,” and in so doing keep alive the true spirit of this holiday season, and a spirit we value in Newberg Nation!

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

Flying Tigers…

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them."
