This week in Newberg Nation….

As most Newberg Nation fans know this week has been a very difficult one here at Newberg High as we lost senior Page Petersen this past weekend. Through our remembrance of Page this week we all reminisced about how funny Page was, his sense of humor impacting anyone he encountered. We also told story after story of how Page was open and inviting to anyone, anytime, and was at ease befriending all.

Loved by all Page was honored this week in a multitude of ways. His advisory class celebrated Page’s life by telling many anecdotal tales, with dozens and dozens of students coming together in Mrs. Zolotoff’s room to both share stories and support one another. A wall of honor was created in the main hallway here at NHS with story after story, well wish after well wish, and various artistic renderings in remembrance of Page covering the wall.

Tuesday became a “Page Out” day here at NHS with students and staff wearing headbands, wool socks and the color blue in honor of Page. Our “Page Out” continued into the evening at the basketball game as approximately four hundred students, hundreds of community members, the basketball team, pep band and cheerleaders all coming together in support of the “Page Out.” Page’s parents and many, many extended family were also in attendance with the event becoming an amazing example of how communities come together in times like these. The amount of support shown to one another and the Petersen family that evening was amazing!

It was truly an incredibly pride filled moment!

I would like to take a moment and express the deepest of gratitude to the many students, staff and community members that came together to help support the Petersen family, our school, our community and one another beginning early last Saturday morning and continuing on throughout the week. Please accept our deepest appreciation for all that you have done and know that you are all Flying Tigers!

Page’s memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 25th, at 2pm at the Bauman Auditorium at George Fox University. We would be honored if you could join us!

Scholarship Update:  Do you have any Scandinavian heritage (family ties to Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, or Sweden)?  Are you interested in a career in forestry, horticulture, or construction?  Are you on the wrestling team?  Do you have an Oregon hunting license?  Do you plan to study art or music?  Do you live in Dundee?  If you said yes to any of these questions, I have a scholarship for you.  If you answered no, I’m sure that I still have a scholarship for you.  Stop by the College and Career Center for applications and more information or look at the list on our webpage.

Internships are available at Newberg High School!
This is a great way to get started with a company that might lead into a paid position. Internships earn high school credit and also look great on college and scholarship applications. We have multiple positions available ranging from office work, retail, and museum tours to a senior activity coordinator. Please pick up an application from Ms. Peterson in the Silver School office.

There is a program with Providence Health System called Career Highlights. These are three hour mini courses focused on a specific health care career field. This qualifies as a Job Shadow needed for graduation. These events are on Saturdays and students need to provide their own transportation.

There is still space in the Radiation Oncology Career Highlight on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. This will actually be offered on the radiation oncology floor of the hospital!

Registration for February Career Highlights began on Jan. 5th and will be open until spaces are filled. The February Career Highlights include:

·         Diagnostic Imaging on Saturday, Feb. 21 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center from  9 a.m.- noon.

·         Rehabilitation Services (physical therapy, speech and language pathology, occupational therapy, audiology) on Friday, Feb. 27 at Providence Portland Medical Center from 1-4 p.m.

Tiger Music

Good luck this weekend to our many band and choir students competing at the Oregon Music Educators Association (OMEA) State Solo Competition in Eugene. If you would like a chance to see all of our competitors they will be performing Sunday, January 18th, at 1pm, 2pm and 5pm at the Hult Center. We would love to see you there!

We would also like to share that we just received news that Jazz Band member Thomas Gaumer is headed to Spokane to compete in the MENC All-Northwest Honor Jazz Band as first trombone with his performance slated for Valentine’s Day weekend. Thomas will be competing with other trombonists from across the Pacific Northwest! Good luck Thomas!

On a related note, our very own Nathan Kim has also been performing marvelously on the piano as he recently qualified for the MTNA national competition to be held in Las Vegas during spring break. Nathan won the Pacific Northwest regionals in Boise in December to earn his trip to the national championships in Las Vegas having to defeat many very talented pianists from across the northwestern corner of the United States to qualify! Way to go Nathan and good luck in Vegas!

Tiger Drama

Mark your calendars drama fans as Mrs. Fersguson’s troupe put together yet another fantastic production! Dates for our winter production include February 5, 6, 7 and 12, 13, 14 with show times at 7pm in the NHS auditorium.

Tiger Athletics

Our Tiger winter athletes continue to compete across the region and are enjoying some great successes so far this winter! Girls Basketball boasts an overall record of 9-4 under the leadership of first year coach Luke Lindell with senior Tori Eichten and Taylor Rarick leading the team in scoring.

Our Tiger wrestlers battled Lake Oswego in a shootout last Wednesday, defeating the Lakers 45-25 and then turned around and hosted the Earl Ellis Tournament on Friday evening finishing 3rd overall. Tiger wrestling is led this year by senior Evan Smith who continues to wrestle very well.

Tiger swimming continues to earn frequent flyer miles in the pool as both the boys and girls teams defeated Canby on Thursday afternoon. Senior David Flores and freshman Tina Childress continue to lead the way in the pool for our Tigers!

Tiger cheer has entered their competition season and are now in their final few weeks of preparation for their run at yet another state championship. This past weekend they competed at Lake Oswego High School and travel to Springfield for yet another stop on their state championship tour tomorrow Saturday, January 17th.

Tiger dance’s quest for a state trophy is also underway as the Tiger Riot Dance Team has been trekking up and down the I-5 corridor this winter with their latest stop scheduled for Stayton on February 7th. If you haven’t had a chance to see The Riot- mark your calendar!

Boys’ basketball continues their outstanding season with an overall record of 10-2 after a heartbreaking overtime loss this past Tuesday night at the hands of the Tigard Tigers. Led by seniors James Willcuts and Jacoby Wolfe our beloved Tigers travel to #1 West Linn tonight to face the Lions!

Congratulations December Student Athletes of the Month!

Tina Childress, 9th (Swimming)
After the Tigers’ first two swim meets, freshman Tina Childress has shown her versatility as a swimmer. She is currently the ladies high point leader and she maintains a 3.5 GPA.

 Jacoby Wolfe, 12th (Basketball)
Through 5 games, he's averaging 15.4 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game.  He is shooting 62.5% from 2pt FG and 85% from the free throw line.  Jacoby was unanimously selected by his teammates and coaches to be team captain.  Even after a big home win the next night, he stayed behind to help clean the gym.  Jacoby is constantly thinking of others before himself.  He is unselfish on the court, and a respected leader off the court.  Jacoby is one of the most coachable players I have ever worked with.

Flying Tiger Marksman!

Congratulations are in order for Newberg Nation senior Sasha Perez who recently qualified for the national Junior Olympics as a Pistol Shooter this past weekend in Sherwood! Sasha will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs this April to compete at nationals, a level she is comfortable with after finishing second in the nation in rifle her sophomore year! Congratulations Sasha and good luck at nationals!

Newberg NationThoughts…

~Principal Risen

As this very difficult week concludes we are reminded that finding greatness and positive outcomes is merely a matter of looking for both. As Henry David Thoreau suggests below, the events of this week; the tributes, stories, actions, memorials and efforts of so many who love and care are the positive, fortunate outcomes that we are capable of despite staring great loss in the eye.

In perfect sync with what Thoreau says below, Newberg Nation’s will has revealed itself and it is a prideful spirit, one that takes the adversity that life can cast upon us and turns it into beautiful, positive, humane fortune. Blessings that are shared both individually, and collectively. One simply had to witness the unity and actions of all of our Flying Tigers this week to know that regardless of how tragic our loss, we will be united, and we will find positive outcomes despite the adversity.

We are all so fortunate to be members of such a wonderful and caring community.

Flying Tigers…

All misfortune is but a stepping stone to fortune…
