Board considers withdrawing from the Willamette ESD

Newberg Oregon School District

Newberg board members will take a hard look at whether to withdraw from the Willamette Education Service District (WESD). Recent legislation (SB 250) allows local school districts to withdraw from their education service district. The school district purchases slightly under $2 million in services from the WESD, primarily to serve education special students. Superintendent Paula Radich believes the local district can provide services more effectively and efficiently. Special Programs Director Don Dorman explained that if Newberg withdrew, it would free dollars from mandated services, allowing Newberg to be more self-sufficient. Withdrawing would also allow Newberg to select services it wanted to purchase and from where it wanted to purchase them. The Newberg board will continue the discussion at its next meeting.
