Changes at Newberg High School
While he was not looking for a change, NHS Principal Kyle Laier had to listen when Oregon City Schools contacted him with an opportunity for career advancement and to work closer to home. Laier has been named Assistant Superintendent of Oregon City School District, to begin this summer.
“This change is bittersweet for me,” said Laier. “I have greatly enjoyed my time in Newberg and strongly believe this high school has the potential to be one of the best in the state. I really wanted to be a part of those efforts going forward, but realize there are times in life when opportunities are presented to you that cannot be ignored. I will greatly miss the students, staff, parents and community members. Newberg is a special place. The students here are some of the best I’ve worked with in my career, the teachers care deeply for our students, and the community support for the high school is truly unique. I wish Newberg Nation the best in the future. ”
In two years at Newberg High School, Laier has been instrumental in providing more paths for students to graduate college, career, and life ready. Partnerships with Newberg area businesses have greatly improved Career and Technical Education (CTE) at NHS. The foundation is in place for continued strong movement in these areas.
“Kyle is an incredibly talented, visionary leader,” said Superintendent Kym LeBlanc-Esparza. “He has been influential on the work around CTE, school and business partnerships and 9th grade transition. Although he was at the helm of Newberg High School only two years, he has had a significant positive impact on students, staff and community. We are proud of his accomplishments and wish him well in his next leadership role.”
Students, staff, and community can be assured the district will move quickly to give stability at the high school, knowing that uncertainty is difficult. Assistant Principal Tami Erion will be recommended to the Board to serve as Interim Principal for the 2018-19 school year. Interim Superintendent Joe Morelock said, “Newberg High School has been through many leadership changes in the past several years. We believe that continuity and stability going into next school year will serve the students, families, and staff best. Tami comes highly recommended and is prepared and excited to serve the needs of our community exceptionally well.”
A thorough search for a permanent principal will take place next year, with opportunities for staff engagement and community feedback.
