Communication after 8/10/21 Board Meeting
To the families and staff of Newberg Public Schools,
Last night, the Newberg School District Board of Directors directed Superintendent Morelock to remove signs, placards, symbols, clothing, and pins that reference Black Lives Matter, the Pride flag, as well as political signs and symbols other than the American or Oregon State flags from our schools. The reasons stated were to avoid any sense of political advocacy or support in our schools. The District will seek legal advice on this directive before its implementation.
At the Board meeting, we heard a sharp difference of opinion about what is, and what is not, political. The Board’s policy committee will be making those determinations in the coming weeks.
We want to clearly state our continuing commitment to all our Newberg and Dundee students and staff, including our students and staff of color and those who identify as LGBTQ. We intend to demonstrate to each of you in word and deed that you belong and are welcome in all of our schools.
Our commitment as a public educational institution is to work to create an environment where every student has what they need to learn and grow as students and as citizens. We look forward to being back to school in-person next month, and are ready to learn and grow together!
