DeCrevel honored for distinguished service
NHS cheerleading coach Carolyn DeCrevel is the 2011 recipient of the Edward Stevens Distinguished Service Award. The Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce recognizes DeCrevel’s influence on three generations of women in the Newberg community at its annual awards banquet on April 7th.
Carolyn DeCrevel has been the heart and soul of school spirit – athletics – and activities at Newberg High School since 1959. Her caring concern and ability to connect with students has provided opportunities for literally thousands of young men and women in our community to be successful.
Carolyn taught physical education at Newberg High School for 44 years. She created the activities program at the high school, shaped the way girls would cheer and how fans would respond. Carolyn started the women’s athletic program at Newberg High School long before anyone had heard of Title IX. She literally shaped young women with her positive attitude, firm but fair rules and a huge dose of love for what she does.
Carolyn retired nine years ago, claiming her retirement plans were to continue coaching cheerleading and helping out in athletics. She continues to coach cheerleading today with the same positive attitude and competitive spirit that she has embraced for the last 51 years. In her golden anniversary season, her cheerleading team took second at the state cheer championships.
The Newberg High School basketball court was named the Carolynb DeCrevel Court last January in recognition to her long service and dedication to the school.
