Informed Consent

Consent is required formally in the special education process for:

  • Consent for evaluation
  • Consent for the provision of special education services
  • Consent for re-evaluation
  • Consent for exchange of information

Informed consent means the parent knows the specifics to which they are giving consent.  In other words, the actual name of the test measure that will be given and understands what the test measure is intended to evaluate/measure. ODE recommends that parents be given “more” rather than “less” information when being asked to sign consent.  It also means that the parents understand and are providing consent to the provision of services, meaning they know what the offer of FAPE is.
