Monson, DeBois round out NHS leadership team

Newberg Oregon School District

New and familiar faces are joining the leadership team at Newberg High School this school year. Assistant Superintendent Dave Parker, who is serving as NHS principal this year, announced that Troy Monson and Andy DeBois will serve as assistant principals.

“Both Troy and Andy are great additions to an already strong team,” says Parker. “Each brings important skills and knowledge to support high school students and staff.”

Monson has been working as a counselor at NHS for the last three years. He replaces Dan Malone, who left NHS last June to return to Roosevelt High School. Monson was responsible for mentoring 30 students with career, academic and personal needs. He also worked to implement and improve educational policy and practice as a member of the school district Teaching and Learning Council.

“Troy will facilitate and serve as our liaison to the counseling program,” said Parker. “He will also be working with our sophomores.”

Monson has experience in both the public and private sectors including four years as a school counselor at St. Helens High School and seven years as a mental health therapist at Providence St. Vincent Hospital. Monson recently completed his administrative licensure program at George Fox University.  He holds a Masters in Counseling Psychology from Lewis and Clark College and a Bachelors degree in Psychology from Portland State University. He coaches youth basketball, lacrosse and soccer.

Parker is counting on newcomer Andy DeBois to provide extra help as an Assistant Principal while he still retains some duties as Assistant Superintendent.  DeBois’s position is temporary for the 2015-16 school year.

“Andy brings a wealth of experience as an Assistant Principal to our district,” said Parker.   “He will be working with freshman and helping to align our master schedule.  Andy will also head up our Student Study Team.”

DeBois has nine years of experience as a principal and assistant principal. As principal at  Scappoose High School last year, he improved systems to better serve students, increased effectiveness of special education instruction and classroom engagement, and helped implement a new district teacher evaluation system.

Previously DeBois was an Assistant Principal at Liberty High School in Hillsboro for four years. There he created interventions for student success in the school’s Freshman Academy, managed the high school discipline team and led professional learning for teachers.

Four years in leadership roles as an assistant principal at Baker Prairie Middle School in Canby and Neah-Kah-Nie High School in Rockaway have given DeBois a range of experiences from managing athletics, activities and student discipline, to implementing literacy and coordinating school safety.

DeBois is a George Fox University graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in history. He earned his Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix and is continuing his administrative coursework at Lewis and Clark College.

Monson and DeBois join Parker, Tim Burke, Alaina Santana and Janay Cookson in their new roles beginning in August.
