Newberg FFA headed to nationals

Four top-rated agriscience projects qualified six Newberg FFA members for national competition in October, 2017. Morgan Lemen, Kylie Holveck, Kennedy Rainey, Cody Cox, Todd Halleman and John McCarthy earned first place finishes in environmental science, social science and food products and processing contests at the 89th Oregon FFA state convention.

Mariah Lemen and Abigayle Darula were awarded the FFA State Degree, the highest honor FFA awards members.

Sixteen Newberg High School students participated in leadership workshops, Career Development Events, service projects, and listened to keynote speakers at the Deschutes County Expo Center March 24-27. The Newberg students, along with 3,000 other FFA members and guests from around the state, also got to sing along with country music singer and songwriter, Jerrod Neiman.

NHS agriculture and technology teacher, Bailey Field, is the Newberg FFA advisor.

  • 1st Place: Food Products and Processing, Division 3 - Morgan Lemen. Project: “Determining Best Preservation Methods for Browning Apples”
  • 1st Place: Social Sciences, Division 4 - Kennedy Rainey and Cody Cox. Project: “Consumer Preference of Honey: Raw vs Pasteurized” 
  • 2nd Place: Social Sciences, Division 5: Alyssa Berry. Project: “Student Perspectives of Antibiotic and Hormone Content in Meat Products"
  • 1st Place: Environmental Science, Division 5 - Kylie Holveck. Project: “Effectiveness of Tenebrio monitor (mealworms) and Zophobas moirio (super worms) Larva in Consuming Styrofoam.” 
  • 1st Place: Environmental Science, Division 6 - Todd Halleman and John McCarthy. Project: “The Behavior of American Bullfrogs When Placed Near Predatory Objects”
  • 2nd Place: Social Sciences, Division 5: Alyssa Berry. Project: “Student Perspectives of Antibiotic and Hormone Content in Meat Products”
