Newberg students fare better than average on state tests
Newberg elementary schools posted aggressive gains in reading and math according to state assessment results released by the Oregon Department of Education.
The Smarter Balanced assessment, in its second year, is designed to evaluate student’s knowledge of state standards in English language arts, math and science. Students in grades 3-8 and 11 are required to take the test.
State assessment results are important indicators of how students are able to use the knowledge and skills they’re developing in school, according to Newberg Superintendent Kym LeBlanc-Esparza. It’s measure among many that helps us monitor and adjust to ensure kids are making growth and developing skills they need to be successful.
Overall, 60 percent of district students met or exceeded standards in English language arts compared to 55 percent statewide, a slight increase from 2015. Edwards, Joan Austin and Dundee elementary schools each posted double-digit increases in student achievement. Principals and teachers credit strong, collaborative teams that align practice and strategies, focus on student data and integration of innovative 21st century skills as contributing to the achievement gains.
Newberg math scores fared slightly better than state averages. Forty-four percent of district students met or exceeded standards compared to 44 percent statewide. Again, elementary grades surpassed state averages with notable achievement at Edwards and Dundee elementary schools. Both schools posted nearly a 12 percent increase in achievement compared to 2015.
“The work over the last two years in our elementary schools is clearly showing in our data,” said Superintendent Kym LeBlanc-Esparza. “Our elementary schools show what great results come when we align our practice, focus on the success of every student and support each other in our professional growth.”
She adds that secondary schools are earlier in the change process as far as instruction, innovation and collaboration.
“Looking at the work our secondary teams are taking on, I feel confident that the aggressive gains are coming,” said LeBlanc-Esparza. “While we all would admit we still have work to do, we are an innovative district on the move.”
