In the News: Booster joins school board race
Polly Peterson will face Walter Woodland for empty Zone 2 seat
In the the only race for the Newberg School District board of directors that doesn’t feature an incumbent, Polly Peterson and Walter Woodland will face off in Zone 2.
“I’ve been involved ever since my kids were in kindergarten,” said Peterson, whose children are in high school now. She was a member of the parent club and the site council at Dundee Elementary School. More recently she was a member of a district committee that looked at graduation requirements and recommended students be required to take a second language and higher levels of math and science.
She said she knew Mark Ankeny wouldn’t seek a second term and some of her acquaintances encouraged her to run. “I kind of feel that I have a unique perspective,” she said, given that she has volunteered from the classroom to district level committees. She sees her candidacy as an extension of that volunteer work.
She also worked to ensure passage of the last bond measure. She has taught in public schools and at George Fox University and believes that a strong public school system needs a strong community behind it.
