In The News: Students, schools, parents prepare for school year

Most district buildings are hosting back-to-school events this week

Classes in the Newberg School District don’t begin until Sept. 8, but students and parents began dropping by this week, at least for a couple of hours, as most district schools began holding registration or preparation events.

For instance, all district elementary schools are hosting school supply drop-off events this week, beginning with Joan Austin, which held its on Monday.

Most schools will have staff on hand so that students and parents can meet their teacher for the upcoming year. School supply lists are available on each building’s home page, which are accessible under the “schools” tab on the district website, www.newberg.k12.or.us.

The rest of the elementary schools will host their drop-off events on Thursday, with Antonia Crater running from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., followed by an ice cream social for kindergarteners and their parents at 6 p.m.

Dundee and Edwards Elementary will both host their events from 6 to 7 p.m., with Ewing Young’s running from 4 to 5 p.m. and Mabel Rush’s from 5 to 6 p.m. Mabel Rush’s event will also feature and ice cream social, as well as a kindergarten information meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the library, with childcare provided.

Both middle schools are holding separate events for returning seventh and eighth grade students, as well as events for incoming sixth grade students.

Chehalem Valley Middle School will host an ice cream social for seventh and eighth grade student Tuesday and will hold a barbecue for sixth grade students from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

In addition to meeting their teachers, students and parents can get class schedules and learn about various programs at CV, such as the new school-wide AVID program, CPRD sports, bus routes and the parent group.

Mountain View held its sixth grade barbecue Tuesday, and will follow up with an ice cream social for returning students from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

“It’s our opportunity to get parents and families in the door before school starts so that they can help set the tone and get some things taken care of,” Chehalem Valley assistant principal Casey Petrie said. “They can purchase their PE uniforms, pay for any fees and pick up counseling forms, all that logistical stuff. Teachers are here, so they get to connect without any other agenda.”

Newberg High School will begin holding registration this week as well, beginning with the freshmen and sophomore classes Wednesday.

All freshmen also attended an orientation session, which included campus tours with teachers on hand, an address from recent NHS graduates and a pep rally.

Juniors will register from either 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. (last names A-L) or 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. (M-Z) Wednesday, with seniors following from 12:30 to 2 p.m. (A-L) or 2 to 3:30 p.m. (M-Z).

Students and parents are asked to park in the Elliot Street student parking lot and walk north to enter the building at the main office and check in.
