The 2017 Partner in Education awards recognizing both an individual and an organization that, through their own initiative, are addressing fundamental needs that make a critical difference in whether or not a student is successful in school -  food, clothing and a safe place to be outside of school. 

Parent leader Emily Chlumak and Newberg Christian Church received the Newberg School District's Partner in Education Award for their exceptional contribution to education in our community. Awards were presented Friday, February 17, 2017 at the annual Chehalem Valley Chamber of Commerce  community awards banquet.

Businesswoman Emily Chlumak was never part of a parent club until she agreed to lead the Chehalem Valley Middle School parent group. Wanting to be more involved in her children's school, she used her extensive community networks to engage parents and community members in supporting teachers, celebrating students and implementing initiatives focused on shifting the school environment to one of inclusion, respect and kindness.

Perhaps Emily's biggest transformation at the 600-student school came when she learned that a third of the CV students qualified for "free lunch" - the education indicator for "economically disadvantaged" students. She quickly realized students lacking resources need a network of parents who have resources. The result is Susan's Closet - a fully stocked clothes closet and pantry open to students in need, no questions asked.

We are proud to recognize Emily as a Partner in Education for her ability to focus on important activities and inspire others to do the same.

Our second Partner Award goes to Newberg Christian Church. Every October they bring volunteers to Newberg schools to spread bark chips on the playground, build planter boxes, pick up trash and pull weeds. Each week church volunteers fill weekend food bags for Joan Austin Elementary students to bring home to households where food is scarce.

Last year, church leaders found themselves examining statistics on the number of middle school students who go home to empty houses when school is out. Middle school principals will tell you that these students easily become some of the most at-risk young people in our community. My Zone - a free after school program open to any 6th-8th grader Monday through Friday - grew out of this need to provide a place for students to go after school instead of an empty house. The program provides middle school students with structure, academic support, enrichment opportunities and of course, food. Armed with generous community contributions and volunteers, Newberg Christian Church has filled a void to support children in our community outside of school. Their action to address a need and collaboration with schools is actively helping more of our community's young people find success.

Each received an original painting by Ewing Young Elementary 1st grade students that interpret their studies of light waves and color.
