Peterson, incumbents elected to school board
Incumbent members of the Newberg School District Board of Directors retained their position in the May 17, 2011 election.
School Board Chairwoman Melinda VanBossuyt, Zone 7 director Debbie Hawblitzel and Zone 1 director Deona Twenge ran unopposed and were elected. Zone 6 director Mitsi Vondracheck defeated challenger Jennifer Powell by a two-to-one margin. Powell sought to withdraw from the race when the Newberg Graphic reported that the Yamhill County District Attorney would file a complaint against her for allegedly embellishing her résumé in the voters’ pamphlet.
Newcomer Polly Peterson was elected to replace zone 3 director Mark Ankeny with 64 percent of the vote over one-time senatorial hopeful Walter Woodland. Peterson is an adjunct professor of writing at George Fox University and an active school volunteer.
She will be sworn in as a school board member at the July school board meeting.
