Racist incidents
To the families of Newberg and Dundee Public Schools,
We have experienced some incidents of unidentified individuals spewing racist slurs and racist talk into Google Meet class sessions. Our sessions are not open to all, but the person gained access by using the name of someone that should have been allowed in the classroom.
These incidents are harmful, especially so to our students of color, and will not be tolerated in the Newberg School District. We apologize to the students in the class who had to experience it. We have seen incidents of this kind affecting schools and school districts across the nation and are saddened and angered that we are now victim to a similar incident in which an individual invaded our virtual classroom to spread hate speech.
We will not tolerate this behavior and are working with the tech department to try to determine the identity of the perpetrators.
We are actively working with staff and the district technology department to investigate the incident and are also working to create new safeguards to deal quickly with these disruptions as well as try to prevent these incidents from happening in the future. We stand behind our Anti-Racist Proclamation and have no tolerance for racial harassment or intimidation of any kind. We will share our findings with law enforcement as needed.
To support the students who were in this class and experienced this disruption, we plan to have support staff join the next class session to facilitate a conversation and provide resources for students who need additional support.
Thank you,
Dr. Joe Morelock
Superintendent, Newberg Public Schools

Gracias,
Dr. Joe Morelock
Superintendente, Escuelas Públicas de Newberg
