School safety top priority
Newberg Public Schools Superintendent Kym LeBlanc-Esparza ordered all schools to heighten security for the remainder of the school day in the aftermath of the school tragedy in Connecticut.
“We are deeply saddened by the events this past week in Connecticut and Clackamas and at our community’s Critter Cabana,” said LeBlanc-Esparza. “This is an anxious time for parents and keeping schools safe is our top priority.”
All school doors except the front door are locked and staff will increase their awareness of persons entering the school. Students may remain inside the building but regular classroom routines are being followed. Bus transportation remains on a normal schedule.
LeBlanc-Esparza said each school has a safety plan, which principals will continue to review. School counselors are available to assist children needing extra help.
Tips and resources for parents on helping children cope with tragedy are on the school district webpage, including tips for talking with children and youth after a recent shooting.
