Social Media Incident Investigated
Over the weekend, police received reports that two Newberg High School students posted pictures and a short video of themselves with firearms on Snapchat. The police have investigated, interviewing the students and notifying their parents. The Newberg Police officers determined the firearms used in the pictures were airsoft and pellet guns. All firearms in both homes, real and fake, were seized. The police have determined there was no plan and no credible danger to students or staff at NHS. The students were notified by police that they are not allowed on school campus until a threat assessment for them can be conducted.
We are communicating this information even in this case where there is not a credible threat of harm because we want to make sure that rumors do not create false information and unnecessary anxiety. No Newberg Public School students or staff were in danger, including those accused of the Snapchat posts.
Safety for our students and staff is our utmost priority. Reporting any concerns is essential to keeping our schools safe. This year, the district is participating with SafeOregon as a way for anyone to report tips and concerns anonymously. The number one reason why students do not report is the fear of retaliation from their peers. The SafeOregon Tip Line can be accessed anonymously via multiple methods, eliminating the possibility of being identified by another student. Anonymity decreases the likelihood that a school safety threat would go unreported.
