Nineteen retiring Newberg School District employees were honored Monday at the district’s annual Crystal Apple Awards. The combined experience of the retiring teachers, classified employees and administrators total 417 years of experience the school district is losing.


School counselors and Welcome Center staff were recognized for their skill, compassion and support for students following the death of four students this school year.

Luke Neff, Green School Humanities teacher, was awarded the first 21st Century Education Inspiration Award for exemplifying the qualities and characteristics necessary for developing student success in the future.

Employees marking five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five,  thirty and thirty-five years of service to the school district were also honored Monday. Their combined years of service total 1,115 years in the Newberg School District.

• Glenn Kindred, 11 years - Food Service at Newberg High School
• Lynnda Varuska, 13 years - Special Ed Teacher at Silver School
• Curt Anderson, 15 years – HVAC technician in Maintenance
• Tom Willing, 17 years - LA/SS Teacher at Mountain View MS
• Sheryl Greiner, 18 years - Grade 2 Teacher at Dundee Elementary
• Kay Johnston, 19 years - Counselor  in Silver School School
• Mary Ruff, 21 years - Special Ed Assistant at  Mabel Rush Elementary
• Paula Ing, 24 years - Secretary, Yellow School
• Nancy Zielinski, 24 years - Grade 3 Teacher at Mabel Rush
• Cindy Phelps, 24 years - Spanish Teacher in Yellow School
• Shannon Stueckle, 24 years - Principal at Mabel Rush Elementary
• Carol Barnhill, 26 years - Kitchen Manager at Mountain View MS
• Linda Hayes, 27 years -  Grade 4 Teacher at Antonia Crater Elementary
