Summer School Starts Monday
(Ver traducción al español (gracias a Isamar Ramírez) a continuación)
Federal Programs Summer School begins this Monday, July 10 at Crater Elementary School.
Classes run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday and will be held through Aug. 3 at Crater, which is located at 203 W Foothills Drive in Newberg.
Students were invited to attend the local Federal Programs Summer School, which will include classes on math, English/language arts, STEM, art, and cooperative learning games (physical education focusing on how to work together). Students will take field trips to Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center and the Newberg Public Library. Depending on their grade levels, students will also visit Oregon State University in Corvallis and the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville. A magician will be visiting the students, and Summer School will end with a celebratory Family Night. (Families will be emailed details on Family Night soon.)
“I love helping students, and I see the value and the benefit of this program,” said Federal Programs Summer School Principal Jessica Fox, who has taught during summer classes and is leading them for the first time. “I see the happy faces that come into our building every year. I think it really helps the students to prevent summer loss.”
Summer loss, or students forgetting what they learned the year before, won’t be a problem for the 245 preK-12 students attending the Federal Programs Summer School. They will have 15 teachers and eight support staff helping them stay sharp and keep their learning focused.
“There are some great people onboard,” Fox said. “We are fortunate, and our students are very lucky. In addition, the regular custodial staff and kitchen staff at Crater have had extra demands placed on them because, generally, they’re able to deep clean, and now they’re working around Summer School hours. So a shout-out to them.”
Federal Programs Summer School families who are awaiting information on bus routes for the school should expect to receive the information in the mail by this Saturday, July 8, said Fox, also a Reading Specialist at Chehalem Valley Middle School during the school year. If the mailing doesn’t come by Saturday, simply text 971-281-1612, and Fox will send you the information.
Besides bus routes, if families have general questions, English-Spanish bilingual Secretary Isamar Ramirez will be working in the office at Crater from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday during Summer School. Contact Ramirez at 503-554-4650. (Note: Federal Programs Summer School is by invitation only and is not available for registration.)
