Summer Splendor

Federal Programs Summer School may have just begun July 10, but it’s already in full swing.

Federal Programs Summer School is by invitation only, and it provides students with enrichment or the opportunity to better understand important subject matter. The 245 preK-12 students taking classes in the sunny season are diving into some engaging lessons to keep their minds sharp. A few examples of what students are up to include:

  • Dual-language classes: Elementary students practice writing and revel in storytime and other activities.
  • Science: Middle schoolers are building “mousetrap cars,” which are made of mousetraps and CDs. Students will race the contraptions, studying the science behind movement.
  • Math and English/Language Arts: High schoolers were fine-tuning their understanding of the written word or math concepts, poring over computers on their own or in groups.

Educators delivered lectures, but they worked hard to manage their classrooms and keep students engaged. Each of the 15 teachers and their support team moved through each room during an exercise, offering individual attention and support.

The last day of Federal Programs Summer School is Aug. 3, but the students will have field trips and more coming up, so stay tuned for more summer updates and photos!
