Welcome Back Event for Staff
Today was the annual welcome back event for staff, but it looked different from previous years. At 8 am, all staff met in the High School Commons for an activity called "The Marshmallow Challenge". Teams of four or five got together and tried to build the tallest free-standing structure that would support one marshmallow...using 20 pieces of spaghetti, a yard of string, and a yard of tape...in 18 minutes!
After the activity, everyone gathered in the High School Auditorium. Watching a TED Talk video by Tom Wujec about the Marshmallow Challenge gave some insight to what can be learned about collaboration. Interim Superintendent Dr. Joe Morelock then introduced himself, sharing his excitement to be in Newberg. Often using humor, Morelock focused on relationship. Staff to staff relationships that express care for and encourage each other makes a positive impact. Staff to student relationships are vital in the educational experience. Schools can create a culture where students care for each other; and finally the relationship between school and community is one we want to expand and celebrate.
Morelock shared work done with the principals this summer on the district theme "All Means All". The district will focus on developing and deepening a Culture of Learning and a Culture of Care so that every student has what they need to learn.
Following the gathering in the auditorium, staff returned to their buildings to continue preparations for the new year, with a good positive vibe in the air.
