Explicit and Purposeful Instruction is a practice in which the teacher deliberately explains and demonstrates the invisible processes, knowledge and skills used in effective reading and writing.

Explicit and Purposeful Instruction includes:

• explaining, modeling and thinking aloud by the teacher
• providing instruction while students listen and observe
• making the invisible thought processes visible for students.
