There are many volunteer opportunities at the NHS Greenhouse and we welcome your time and interest. You do not need to be a master gardener or have teaching experience to volunteer at the high school greenhouse. You are welcome to assist the teacher by helping students in classes, helping with specific projects and/or helping with projects on-site outside of class time. All volunteers are required to go through the school volunteer screening process.
Top 10 Reasons to Volunteer at the Greenhouse
- #10 The hours spent volunteering at the NHS Horticulture Program fulfill some of the volunteer hours required for MG re-certification.
- #9 Volunteering gives you an opportunity to continue your MG education through the instruction offered in the horticulture classes. NHS Students can garner 7 college credits out of the General and Ornamental Horticulture classes.
- #8 Be the envy of all your friends and hang out with amazing people who love to work with plants
- #7 You can be involved in Newberg and Dundee Community planting projects.
- #6 Mentor and encourage a new generation of gardeners through working with students in the NHS Horticulture program. We have some really great students who are fun to be around and it helps keep us young
- #5 The NHS greenhouse provides heated space for MG plant starts. By volunteering you can be an extension of the MG propagation program. It also gives you a chance to perfect your propagation techniques.
- #4 You have opportunities to hear guest speakers from nursery operators, Allison Inn Gardens, plant genetic specialists, Bonsai experts, grafting technicians and more.
- #3 The opportunity to work at MG Clinic tables during our May plant sale and earn clinic time toward certification/recertification.
- #2 Opportunities to attend fieldtrips and tour local nurseries including Terra Nova, Bailey’s Nursery, Smith Gardens, KCK Farms and others
- #1 We have fun, get to know each other and work well as a team. Plus the instructor needs all the help he can get.
If class times do not work for you to volunteer, there are other opportunities, such as mentoring students and projects outside class times, after school or on weekends. You can visit a class by checking into the HS Main office ahead of class time; volunteering requires a background check/ID card from the district school office and OSU.
