We are a self-funded horticulture program that makes connections within our community and surrounding area with public agencies, volunteers and private companies. At this time we have working relationships with the Yamhill County Master Gardeners, City of Newberg, Chehalem Park and Recreation District, Newberg Rotary, Yamhill County Master Recyclers, Portland Community College and many others to provide opportunities for students to experience the different aspects of horticulture.
Students earn High School science and/or elective credits and have the opportunity to earn up to 7 free college credits through PCC by taking the Intro to Horticulture and Greenhouse classes.
Volunteers from the community are essential to the program and through our cooperation we are working to make our cities of Newberg and Dundee more beautiful places to live and give the students a well rounded horticultural education.
The Horticulture Program has seen tremendous growth over the past decade. The ground work for this growth was laid in the relationship developed with the Yamhill County Master Gardeners. The volunteer work and countless hours this group contributes have created the growth in the program.
In February of 2010 we completed a new state of the art greenhouse structure that had been in process for over a year. The majority of monies and labor came from community donations (see our community supporters' page). It is amazing what a caring and giving community we live in.
Throughout this website you can look and read about many of the exciting projects that we have going on. You can always see our handiwork whenever you travel the cities of Newberg and Dundee. All the hanging baskets for the City of Newberg are grown at our greenhouse and many of the plants along our roadways, library, parks, golf course and fire stations have been propagated and grown in our greenhouse.
Digger Magazine, published by the Oregon Nursery Association, featured an article in February 2012 "Green and Growing" to praise the program at Newberg High School and horticulture instructor, Peter Siderius. Click on the link to read the full article.
