Radon Testing
Radon is a naturally occurring colorless, odorless gas that is a by-product of the decay of radioactive materials potentially present in bedrock and soil. Radon gas may enter the lowest level of a building through floor cracks, structural joints, or plumbing conduits. The EPA’s recommended action level for annual exposure to radon gas is 4.0 picoCuries per liter of air (pCi/L). This recommended action level is not a regulatory requirement, but is the level at which the EPA recommends that building owners take action to reduce the level.
Newberg School District recognizes the importance of a healthy environment for students, staff and community. Testing for elevated radon levels will be conducted according to the NSD Healthy Schools Plan by a licensed, certified industrial hygienist. Results will be provided by a certified lab and be made available publicly.
Radon testing schedule:
2016-17 – Dundee Elementary, Ewing Young Elementary Edwards Elementary and portables (test results available)
2017-18 - Joan Austin Elementary, Crater Elementary, Mabel Rush Elementary
2018-19 – Chehalem Valley Middle School, Mountain View Middle School, Springbrook education Center
2019-2020 – Newberg High School, District Office, Physical Plant
